New child care centre opens in Richmond core at REMY development

The West Cambie Children’s Centre – located in the newly developed REMY condominium building in central Richmond – marked its official opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony on April 11, 2013.

The centre fills a need for increased child care services in the West Cambie/City Centre area, which is ranked the second highest in need within the City of Richmond. The centre will be licensed for approximately 60 children, ranging from infants to age 5. It will be run by the Society of Richmond Children’s Centres, a non-profit society that currently operates three other child care facilities in Richmond.

On hand to mark the event were Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, Richmond East MLA Linda Reid and Nicky Byers, executive director of the Society of Richmond Children’s Centre. Oris Developments (Cambie) Corp. president Dana Westermark emceed the opening, which was held at the Oris development REMY.

“Any parent can tell you of the importance of quality, licensed child care and we know that demand exceeds supply right across Canada. That’s why the City of Richmond has made child care an important priority among the many social needs in our community,” said Mayor Brodie.

“This facility will be the first of six new child care facilities, providing more than 200 additional spaces for children, to open over the next few years,” he continued. “We have also hired a full time child care coordinator to continue to work to secure more new facilities to meet the needs of Richmond families. This facility wouldn’t be possible without the support of our partners and we’re pleased to recognize their support today.”

MLA Linda Reid added, “I believe we strengthen community child by child. Creating new opportunities for early childhood development is important work and the Province of B.C. is pleased to work in partnership with the City of Richmond to support this project at the REMY. Special thanks to Oris for going the extra mile.”

Fees for the centre are yet to be determined. After-school care may be available at a later date.

The West Cambie Children’s Centre was funded by the City of Richmond and the Province of B.C. The building is owned by the City of Richmond. The West Cambie Children’s Centre is located at 4033 Stolberg Street, Richmond, B.C.
